July Popular Mechanics Jason C. Minick’s career in corporate, commercial and news photography has spanned more than 18 years, as he covered and captured historic and community events throughout the area. Early in his career, Minick served as a freelancer, staffer, and then chief photographer at a daily paper in Lewistown, Pa. He later accepted the position of chief photographer at The Sentinel in Carlisle, Pa.

Minick has covered a multitude of news events, including visits from Presidents, candidates and dignitaries. Minick's true love, however, is for "community journalism," which allows him to capture everyday life on a daily basis. His work has earned him numerous state and regional awards throughout his career. In 2001, Minick spent 10 days traveling across war-torn Bosnia, documenting an American relief group's efforts to help the Bosnian children cope with the aftermath of war. Minick’s work has been showcased in newspapers, magazines, and media outlets around the world.

Now he has taken that passion and style into creating his own commercial and editorial photography business. Minick's current clients call on him for his photojournalistic style to capture candid moments while also making his subjects comfortable during those times when creative portraits need to be taken. Those clients include: Philadelphia University, Harrisburg Area Community College, Harrisburg University,  Sacunas, The Patriot-News, The Associated Press, PPO&S, Holy Spirit Hospital, Carlisle Area Regional Medical Center, Commerce Bank, Highmark, Gettysburg College and others.

If you are interested in preserving or promoting your business or event, please contact Minick for rates and availability at jcm@minickphotography.com

In June 2001 I traveled across Bosnia documenting the efforts of an American relief group. Many of the images were originally published in color. I chose to upload a few of them here in b&w. Color can sometimes distract the reader. I especially want the faces of the children to be seen. Their faces and eyes tell their story. My goal was to show that long after troops are pulled out and the media moves on to another war zone, citizens are left to pick up the pieces and move on. I shot nearly 1000 images total. A small piece I wrote to accompany the photo essay at the time explains the relief group's mission....

Six years after the bloody conflict ended in the former Yugoslavia, the ravages of the war still are evident on the faces of the people, and the buildings that surround them. Many children now are refugees and orphans displaced after the ethnic cleansing and shelling by the Serbs.

One group helping the children is TWI For The Children in Virgina, which has taken on the challenge of helping them cope with the loss of family, friends and their villages. The group attempts to teach the children not to carry on the anger from the war into adulthood, thus continuing the conflict. Sarajevo, which was hit the hardest, still has many bombed out structures left as is because there is no money to demolish them.

Another fact of life for the people are an estimated one million land mines that still litter the beautiful mountains and fields. The danger is so pervasive that the schools have plastic models of landmines hanging on the walls to educate the children about their dangers. Still, life cycles on, and during the few hours children are in summer camps, they seem to forget they are homeless, orphaned and sometimes, disabled. I plan to re-edit all my images and add more to the album in the future.

Minick Photography Goes In Motion!
This spring marks the start of the 5th year in business for Minick Photography! As trends change in marketing and advertising, Minick Photography is also evolving to capture the multi-media needs of clients. We have added HD video services to the business. After reaching out to clients, and receiving positive feedback, we have decided to take on video projects. We will produce mainly testimonials and short event clips for the web. The goal is simple. We are not competing with the video production crews that do lengthy productions and broadcast TV spots at this point; but, rather provide a smaller service for times when you want short, well polished clips promoting your business on the web, in house or other video marketing sources and kiosks. We see the print medium changing. As a result of this change, many clients will want to do more marketing utilizing their own websites by uploading events, testimonials from customers, clients, and personnel making information readily available at the click of a mouse. Owner, Jason Minick, has a background in TV production and is looking forward to working with this medium again. We are not replacing the still work or doing less of it, just supplementing it and growing our business. In fact, there may be many times when clients would take advantage of being able to do both stills and video in one sitting. Feel free to contact us at jcm@minickphotography.com for a quote or with questions.
